Propecia Drug Class and Mechanism

PROPECIA is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in MEN ONLY.In humans, the mechanism of action of finasteride is based on its preferential inhibition of the Type II isozyme. Using native tissues (scalp and prostate), in vitro binding studies examining the potential of finasteride to inhibit either isozyme revealed a 100-fold selectivity for the human Type II 5a-reductase over Type I isozyme (IC50=500 and 4.2 nM for Type I and II, respectively). For both isozymes, the inhibition by finasteride is accompanied by reduction of the inhibitor to dihydrofinasteride and adduct formation with NADP+.

Propecia Uses

Propecia is used to treat male pattern hair loss and is to be used only by adult men.Take one tablet daily or as directed by your doctor. This drug may be taken with or without meals. This drug usually must be taken regularly for 3 months for the benefits to be noticeable. Once treatment is stopped, any gain in hair quantity will be lost. If Propecia is crushed prior to administration, it must not be handled by women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant.

Propecia Side Effects

Stop taking finasteride and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).

Other, less serious Propecia 1 Mg Side effects have been reported but usually resolve with continued treatment. Continue to take finasteride and notify your doctor if you experience

decreased libido (sex drive);

decreased volume of ejaculate;
impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection); or
Breast tenderness or enlargement.

In clinical studies, single doses of finasteride up to 400 mg and multiple doses of finasteride up to 80 mg/day for three months did not result in adverse reactions. Until further experience is obtained, no specific treatment for an overdose with finasteride can be recommended. Significant lethality was observed in male and female mice at single oral doses of 1500 mg/m2 (500 mg/kg) and in female and male rats at single oral doses of 2360 mg/m2 (400 mg/kg) and 5900 mg/m2 (1000 mg/kg), respectively.
