The last thing a submariner wishes is to be noticed. In fact, as a member of the "Silent Service" it is their work at jobs to go about their business completely undetected

Well, Electronics Technician 1st Class (SS) Gregory Migliore may be a submariner, nevertheless his current duty at the U Navy Submarine Museum in Groton, Conn has him striving to be onward everyone's radar. In fact, as a tour guide assigned to the submarine-turned-museum, ex-USS Nautilus (SSN 571) he has an obligation to be noticed by dint of tourists year round.

In serving disclosed his shore rotation on Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, Migliore is responsible for duties ranging from making confident the museum is open upon time to making sure tourists' questions can be answered.

Migliore recognizes his latest mission has an ironic twist. "When mostly of us were on boats, we would not ever deal with the public. Our whole piece of work was to make sure we were at no time seen," he said. "Then we be derived here and we have to deal with the public upon a daily basis. It's a weird switch for me"

however the change in task doesn't pass unaided. When a Sailor arrives at the museum, he is inundated with public relations training. After the first several weeks, a strange tour guide should be able to answer any tourist's question without hesitation.

"We obviously want to make positive we represent the Navy well when tourists are here," Migliore said. "[Our officers] make indisputable we get all the training we ne in courtesy and Navy heritage. We are drilled in answering the basic Navy questions commonalty always ask."

on the contrary the training can't save them each time.

"It secures tough sometimes, like when a little kid asks by what means nuclear propulsion works," said Migliore. "It's not a strange question, unless it's hard to answer when you propose yourself in the mind of a little kid. Trying to explain that to a little kid who's still learning basic math and science in a way he can understand is nothing easy."

Basic submarine knowledge and Nautilus history is just single part of making a upright tour guide. Migliore, Nautilus' instant Sailor of the Year, says personal appearance is just as important for the Sailors serving at the museum.

"We're the first undivideds people see here at Nautilus," he said, "so we ne to constantly be squared away and looking our best. A apportionment of people who come here don't know to a great degree about the Navy, so their perception of us is their first impression of Navy submariners and Sailors. We ne to make steady it's a good one."

And that idea is what be seens to make Migliore most splendid of his job.

"I be moved very excited about being able to indicate the submarine force to commonalty that have no idea about it or its history. It's the silent service, on the other hand it's also a silent piece of work because not many people know what we do. I'm happy that I can help nation understand everything at least a little better."
